Limburg Lahn, Germany: 10 things to know before planning your trip

Germany is arguably the choice for everyone’s fairytale ‘happily ever after’. Every step through its magnificent castles, alpine forests, and quaint towns recreates scenes from illustrated storybooks that we possessed as kids. Although Eur0ping plans to travel to all the pretty towns of Germany out there, we picked Limburg Lahn as our spot for the day.

We had a pleasant visit to this town and here are a bunch of tips in case you’re planning to visit Limburg Lahn. (or just planning to go somewhere obscure!)

#1 Very close to Frankfurt!

Easily accessible through autobahn and ICE, Limburg Lahn is the most beautiful historic town of Germany near Frankfurt. The colorful town is a hidden gem and has the prettiest and the best preserved half-timbered houses along the river Lahn. Anyone who’s visiting Frankfurt in Germany or even planning a road trip from Netherlands should add this fantasy town to their bucket list.

#2 Road trip is beautiful!

If you’re planning a road trip to the beautiful Limburg an der Lahn, you should know that it is located on the E35 (A3) motorway, about halfway between Bonn and Frankfurt-am-Main. If you’re coming from Amsterdam, it will take around 4.5 hours, with gorgeous sceneries to soak in.

#3 Public transport is easy!

If you’re planning a train journey to Limburg (Lahn) it will take you approx. 4-5 hours and you’ll have to change stations at least once. The fastest journey is 3 hours 40 mins (not direct) via ICE (high-speed train) which will cost you around €25-30 one-way. If you do not plan to shell so much, there is always the option of the bus which will eat up about 7 hours.

#4 Ideal for Day Excursion!

Limburg Lahn is a small town where people are mostly early to bed. The markets close around 5 pm, the restaurants a little later and it is quite desolate by 9 PM! Mostly the town is fast asleep by 10. So if you’re planning a day trip, make sure you reach Limburg early otherwise it is best to stay the night in this stunning well-preserved town.

#5 Eur0ping TIP (not sponsored):

Restaurant Amalfi is a nice place to grab some Italian food and German beer. The staff is really sweet and the ambiance is worth a visit, especially the beautifully laid out tables in the garden.

#6 Car Parking

Car parking is mostly cheap in Limburg Lahn. It will cost you not more than €2 for every 2 hours and there are some free parking points also. This website can help you. (again – not sponsored. Just something we found helpful)

#7 Main tourist spots!

Limburg Lahn is a beautiful town to explore; especially the main Cathedral with seven towers, the old bridge over River Lahn, and the historic old town which is 800 years old, so it is advisable to visit the town with the good weather around.

#8 Can plan a one-day stay trip

Limburg Lahn is a pleasant place for a day trip with a lot of places to explore even if you’re planning a stopover towards the end of your German vacation. There are really cheap and nice hotel options in town.

#9 Eur0ping Instagram Tip:

A shout out to all you shutterbugs and Instagrammers. The best view of the Limburg Cathedral is from the Old River bridge. Thank me later!

#10 Walking tour is the best way to explore Limburg Lahn

The best way, to enjoy the old town, is to walk around and marvel at the gorgeous half-timbered colorful houses dating back to the 13th century. Make your way through cobbled street alleys and soak in the charm of old houses and streets while the sound of flowing water fills the valley. Most of these houses have been converted into shops and restaurants, so don’t forget to buy a souvenir or two and sit by the café to enjoy local German beer.

    Hello guys,
I am from Limburg and I have to correct you. The restaurants in Limburg are open until like 10-11 O clock.
The shops are closeing at 6-7 O clock.
Limburg an der Lahn is not the most historical town near Frankfurt. There are a lot of outhers. For example: Wetzlar, Marburg, Seligenstadt, Königstein, Kronberg and the most beautiful and historic town near Frankfurt is Fulda.
But Limburg is also quite beautiful. It is just my own opinion.
